A cunning fox lived in a deep forest. He was as clever as he was intelligent. One day, while roaming around in search of food, he got very hungry. But even after roaming around all day, he could not find any prey.

Suddenly, he saw a big tiger sitting on the bank of a river. The tiger had just killed a deer and was happily eating its meat. The fox's tongue watered, but he knew that by fighting the tiger directly, he would get nothing, but his life would be lost. So he thought of using his intelligence.

এক গভীর জঙ্গলে বাস করত এক ধূর্ত শিয়াল। সে যেমন ছিল চালাক, তেমনই ছিল বুদ্ধিমান। একদিন খাবারের খোঁজে ঘুরতে ঘুরতে তার খুব খিদে পেল। কিন্তু সারাদিন ঘুরেও সে কোনো শিকার জোগাড় করতে পারল না।

হঠাৎ সে দেখল, এক নদীর ধারে একটি বড় বাঘ বসে আছে। বাঘটিพึ่ง একটি হরিণ শিকার করেছে এবং মনের সুখে তার মাংস খাচ্ছে। শিয়ালের জিভে জল এসে গেল, কিন্তু সে জানত যে বাঘের সাথে সরাসরি লড়াই করে সে কিছুই পাবে না, বরং প্রাণটাই যাবে। তাই সে তার বুদ্ধি কাজে লাগানোর কথা ভাবল।

শিয়ালটি খুব সাবধানে বাঘের কাছে এগিয়ে গিয়ে নম্রভাবে বলল, "প্রণাম বাঘমামা! বনের রাজা আপনি, আপনার শিকার করার ক্ষমতা সত্যিই অসাধারণ!"

অহংকারী বাঘটি প্রশংসা শুনে খুব খুশি হলো। সে গর্বের সাথে বলল, "হুম, তা তো বটেই! এই জঙ্গলে আমার চেয়ে শক্তিশালী আর কে আছে?"

শিয়াল চালাকি করে বলল, "সেটি হলো বুদ্ধির শক্তি, মামা। আর শুনেছি, যে কোনো দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতায় সবচেয়ে দ্রুত দৌড়াতে পারে, তার বুদ্ধিও নাকি সবচেয়ে বেশি।"

বাঘ হেসে বলল, "দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতা? আমার চেয়ে দ্রুত এই জঙ্গলে কেউ দৌড়াতে পারে না। আমিই জিতব।"

শিয়াল বলল, "তাহলে চলুন, একটা প্রতিযোগিতা হয়ে যাক। ওই যে দূরের তালগাছটা দেখছেন, ওখান পর্যন্ত আমরা দৌড়াব। যে আগে পৌঁছাতে পারবে, এই হরিণের মাংসটা তারই হবে।"

বাঘ রাজি হয়ে গেল। সে ভাবল, এই সামান্য শিয়ালকে হারানো তো কয়েক মুহূর্তের ব্যাপার।

শিয়াল বলল, "কিন্তু একটা নিয়ম আছে, মামা। আপনি তো অনেক শক্তিশালী, তাই আপনাকে কিছুটা ছাড় দিতে হবে। আমি যখন তিনবার 'হুক্কা হুয়া' বলে ডাক দেব, তারপর আপনি দৌড় শুরু করবেন। আমি প্রথম ডাকেই দৌড় শুরু করব।"

সেখানে পৌঁছে সে এদিক-ওদিক শিয়ালকে খুঁজতে লাগল। কিন্তু শিয়ালকে কোথাও দেখতে পেল না। বাঘ ভাবল, "শিয়ালটা নিশ্চয়ই হেরে গিয়ে লজ্জায় পালিয়েছে।" সে বিজয়ীর মেজাজে হাসতে হাসতে আবার নদীর ধারে ফিরে এলো।

 

কিন্তু ফিরে এসে সে দেখল, হরিণের মাংসটা সেখানে নেই! বাঘ কিছুই বুঝতে পারল না।
