Long ago, in a beautiful kingdom called Sonarajya, there lived a princess named Alokomala. Her form was as bright as her heart was full of kindness. Everyone in the kingdom loved her very much.

But beyond the borders of that kingdom, deep in a cursed forest, in a dark cave, lived a terrible demon named Mayavati. She was very lonely and her mind was full of jealousy and bitterness. She could not tolerate human happiness at all.

One day, Mayavati heard the demon princess. She thought, "My life is so full of suffering, and that princess is so happy! I will take away her happiness."

Thinking this, Mayavati created a web of illusion. One evening, when Princess Alokomala was walking alone in the garden, the demon took the form of a beautiful deer and stood in front of her. Seeing the deer, the princess was very moved. As soon as she reached out to caress the deer, Mayawati returned to her original form and took the princess to her dark cave.

অনেক দিন আগের কথা, সোনারাজ্য নামে এক সুন্দর রাজ্যে বাস করত এক রাজকন্যা, নাম তার আলোকমালা। তার রূপে যেমন আলো ছিল, তেমনই তার মন ছিল দয়ায় ভরা। রাজ্যের সবাই তাকে খুব ভালোবাসত।

কিন্তু সেই রাজ্যের সীমানার ওপারে, এক অভিশপ্ত অরণ্যের গভীরে এক অন্ধকার গুহায় বাস করত মায়াবতী নামের এক ভয়ঙ্করী রাক্ষসী। সে ছিল ভীষণ একা এবং তার মন ছিল হিংসা ও তিক্ততায় পূর্ণ। মানুষের সুখ-আনন্দ সে একদমই সহ্য করতে পারত না।

একদিন মায়াবতী রাক্ষসী রাজকন্যার কথা শুনল। সে ভাবল, "আমার জীবনটা এত কষ্টে ভরা, আর ওই রাজকন্যা এত সুখে আছে! আমি ওর সুখ কেড়ে নেব।"

এই ভেবে, মায়াবতী এক মায়াজাল তৈরি করল। একদিন সন্ধ্যায় রাজকন্যা আলোকমালা যখন বাগানে একাই হাঁটছিল, রাক্ষসী এক সুন্দর হরিণের রূপ ধরে তার সামনে এসে দাঁড়াল। হরিণটিকে দেখে রাজকন্যার খুব মায়া হলো। সে হরিণটিকে আদর করতে যেই না হাত বাড়াল, অমনি মায়াবতী তার আসল রূপে ফিরে এসে রাজকন্যাকে তুলে নিয়ে গেল তার অন্ধকার গুহায়।
